Why is My Compound-Cut Project Lopsided?

By Carole Rothman

Compound-cut projects require a blank with faces that are square to each other; a saw blade that’s vertical; and a pattern that’s placed accurately. Once you have successfully set up your scroll saw, cut this elegant butterfly project. To ensure a successful result:

1. Use an engineer’s square to check all faces of the blank. If not square, you may be able to correct this with a belt sander and miter gauge.

2. Crease the pattern sharply on the fold line; place the fold line precisely at the wood’s edge.

3. Cover the blanks with tape and use a blade large enough to cut the wood easily. These will make you less likely to force the blade and distort the cut.
