Clever project to create a custom stained glass window
Joseph Lucania, of Holmdel, N.J., created this colorful design based on one of the many stained glass windows in St. Catharine’s Church. Joseph has made patterns of this design available below for anyone interested in making one.
The project is made from 1/2″ (13mm)- and 1/8″ (3mm)-thick Baltic birch plywood and is surrounded by pine molding. Cut the 1/2″ (13mm)-thick Baltic birch plywood backing board to 21 1/2″ (749mm)-wide x 59 1/2″ (1511mm)-long and cut the pine molding to size. Use the template to draw the lozenger-shaped designs onto the backing board and stipple Folk Art Inca gold acrylic paint into the lozengers using a #4 filbert brush. Glue the molding in place.
Cut the othe elements using a #5 blade. Sand down, or add risers to pieces to achieve the thickness indicated on the pattern. Dry assemble the window and make any necessary adjustments. Paint the pieces using Folk Art metallic acrylic paints. Allow the paint to dry and attach the overlay to the backing board. Finally, seal the project with Delta Ceramcoat satin exterior/interior super tough polyurethane varnish. Attach a hanging wire to the back using screw eyes.
